PROJECT OVERVIEW

Create a new app  that will simplify bill splitting between roommates by onboarding both billers (vendors) in addition to the users.


THE PROBLEM & USER INSIGHT

Mindy, a recent college graduate, who is entering the workforce, needs a way for her and her roommates to manage their shared bills so they can pay on time, in a way that unburdens Mindy from having to hold her roommates accountable.


How might BilliUs consolidate and split bills in a way that relieves its users from having to hold each other accountable?

DEFINE PHASE & USER RESEARCH

We started by sending out a survey through various social media channels.  


Out of 100 participants, we extracted that 58% of those between 18-30 years old DO split their bills. This really helped solidify our proto persona assumptions that there was an audience for a tool like BilliUs to help manage bills, bill splitting and prevent missing payment dates.


After our survey, we conducted a total of 9 user interviews to help create our affinity diagram. More than half of those below 30 years of age were in a living situation that involved stressful conversations in getting their roommates to remember their shared bills.

USER PERSONA

From our affinity diagram, we took the key takeaways and used them to create our user persona, Mindy.  Mindy is a 24 year old entry-level accountant that has a problem with remembering to actually split her bills and collect her roommates portion each month.

Being financially conscious, she likes to budgeting and bill-pay apps to stay on top of her finances.

IDEATION

Going into the features of the app, we used the “I like, I wish, What If”
 tool.  We know that Mindy wants payment reminders for both herself and her roommates, prefers to pay all her bills in one app, and lastly wants to receive alerts for upcoming payments.

STORY BOARD & USER JOURNEY MAP

A user journey map was developed to further define the pain points Mind experiences during the current process of paying and attempting to split her bills.  This helped to provide support for how our features would be implemented in resolving those pain points.

From there, we illustrated Mindy's experience via story boarding and how her an her roommates pain points would be resolved be using BilliUs.

USER FLOWS

We then began to develop our user flows which focused on onboarding, importing of. billers, splitting bills, and viewing all bills.  We paid closest attention and iterated the bill splitting process in various ways to try to minimize time spent.

PROTOTYPING & USER TESTING

After narrowing down our user flows and user tasks, we began to paper prototype the most essential screens and iterate how our features could be visually laid out.  Once our team compared iterations, we dot voted on those that we liked best and created a low fidelity prototype in Figma to perform user testing.

USER TESTING OBJECTIVES:

•Users successfully create a BilliUs account

•Users add a payment method to their wallet

•Upload a bill into BilliUs

•Split the bill between the owner and a roommate

USER TESTING FEEDBACK:

•Testers were successfully able to create an account with BilliUs

•Testers were successfully able to easily import a bill within the app

•Testers were initially uneasy about the credit score, security, trends portion of the app
